It was just a matter of time. After making the first free ascent of the 9a+ Guggenheim in mid-February, 44-year-old Basque climber Iker Pou has now completed the most difficult connection in the huge grotto on the island of Mallorca. Called Guggen-Hell, the new linkup overhangs a staggering 50 meters and requires not only huge endurance, but also fingers of steel for the two-finger pockets at the back of the cave.

Graded 9a+/b, Guggenhell is now the hardest sport climb on the island, up a notch from Big Men freed by the youngest of the Pou brothers in 2015 and still unrepeated.
