Blood Moon: nuova via britannica sul Tsaranoro Atsimo in Madagascar

Il Tsaranoro in Madagascar è come una gallina dalle uova d'oro. Da quando i tedeschi Kurt Albert e Bernd Arnold hanno aperto le prime vie nel massiccio nel 1995, Rain Boto (7b+, 420m) e Lemurenschreck (7a +, 420m), le enormi pareti di granito continuano ad attirare arrampicatori da tutto il mondo alla ricerca di poter lasciare la propria firma sulla sua roccia inviolata. Gli ultimi a riuscirci sono stati i climbers britannici Alan Carne, Calum Cunningham e Robbie Phillips che, nonostante un incidente in parete, hanno aperto una nuova big wall sul Tsaranoro Atsimo.

Dopo essersi riscaldati - si fa per dire - salendo a vista il 7c+ della nuovissima via Soavadia di Arnaud Petit & co, il terzetto ha iniziato una linea sul Tsaranoro Atsimo, ma ben presto ha dovuto ritirarsi per via di una sezione di roccia completamente liscia. Qualche giorno dopo sono tornati per tentare un’altra linea, questa volta tra Mora Mora e Fire in the Belly, e nei sei giorni successivi sono riusciti ad aprire una linea di 700 metri e 13 tiri. Questa sale una linea indipendente, a parte gli ultimi due tiri che condivide con Mora Mora.

Dopo la prima salita il team britannico è tornato per tentare la prima libera ma sfortunatamente Carne, cadendo da capocordata, si è fratturato una gamba. Quello che è seguito è stato descritto da Phillips come il giorno più intenso della sua vita: Carne aveva immensi dolori ma Phillips ha mantenuto la calma e ha preparato la evacuazione in doppia, mentre Cunningham si è calato alla base della parete ed è ritornato al campeggio in soli 15 minuti, invece di 1 ora, per avvisare dell’incidente. Con l’aiuto della popolazione locale Carne è stato trasportato su una barella improvvisata, portato all'ospedale più vicino e successivamente sull’isola La Reunion dove ha subito un intervento chirurgico.

Anche se scossi da questo “calvario", i due scozzesi sono tornati poco dopo sulla montagna e nei tre giorni successivi hanno liberato tutti i tiri. La nuova via si chiama Blood Moon, affronta difficoltà fino a 8a+ e ci è stata descritta da Philips come "molto bella; probabilmente sale una delle linee migliori e più evidenti dell'intero Tsaranoro. Siamo stati molto fortunati a riuscirci."

SUCCESS!!!! Last week @calumcunningham3 and I successfully free climbed a new line on the 700m face of Tsaranoro Atsimo! For those that don't know, we attempted a line earlier in the trip only to be rebutted by the wall with sheer blankness. We took it back to the drawing board and with the assistance of Gilles Gautier's lovely set of binoculars, I spied out a line that I was certain we could figure something out on. ⠀⠀ Calum, Alan Carne and I climbed boldly upwards in true ground up style, battling it out through some dodgy flakey rock and keeping true to our personal ethics. After 6 days of hard work and some outstanding performances from all the team, we had ourselves a wonderful new line, completely bolted and ready to go! At that point, @alastair__lee had come out to capture on film some of the magic of the free climbing attempt... and that was when disaster struck with Alan's accident! (You can read all about this on the last post) ⠀⠀ When we returned 4 or 5 days later to the wall, our minds were in a slightly different place as you can imagine... It became a challenge to keep a level head and I was (I'll admit), slightly worried that the horrendous experience that we had all endured at Alan's expense would, like a rot, eat away insidiously at our positive thoughts, leaving us only with the memory of our fallen comrade, and fear where courage and ambition once resided. ⠀⠀ It became apparent however that we were stronger than that Alan had given me some positive words of encouragement before I left him; he said he wished that we'd go for it, not to hold back, but just to be careful and that he'd be with us in spirit! And with that we climbed long and hard for days, and it was on Day 3 of our free attempt, that we summited Tsaranoro Atsimo giving to the wall it's latest addition: ⠀⠀ "Blood Moon" - 8a+ or 5.13c ⠀⠀ WE DID IT GUYS!!!
