King of Kanzi - Kanzianiberg in Austria to host 1980’s Climbing Festival
Austria’s Kanzianiberg is about to host King of Kanzi, the climbing festival with a 1980’s theme in one of the country’s premier climbing areas that, ever since the ’70’s, witnessed the evolution of sport climbing. This year the meeting kicks off with Italians Nives Meroi and Romano Benet and their evening lecture Makalu: One Mountain. Three Stories. The Italian couple will obviously also talk about Annapurna, their 14th 8000er summited on 11 May.
Saturday and Sunday are dedicated to sport climbing with the usual climbing marathon open to all, as well as climbing courses for beginners and a series of different workshops (climbing for alpinists with Steve House, a climbing course for women only with Lisi Steurer, climbing technique with Jacopo Larcher and much more). Obviously there’s bouldering, slackline and highline, via ferrata for the whole family, film screenings such as Metanoia with Jeff Lowe and also a debate about the spirit of sullo spirito of free solo climbing with Markus Pucher, Mich Kemeter, Lisi Steurer, Lorraine Huber and Thomas Brandauer.
The meeting draws to a close on Monday 5 June, after the party dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the IG-Sportklettern Kärntern association which, a quarter of a century ago, drilled the first bolts on these limestone walls. At the time the climbers wore motley coloured lycra tights… the perfect outfit for this fun-packed three day event at Kanzianiberg.
