Ice World Cup Are - the results
François Lombard and Isabelle Carrier win at Are. Will Gadd and Kim Csizmazia overall winners of the Ice World Cup 2000.

| Saturday 11 March. The sixth and final stage of the Ice World Cup 2000 was held in Are, Sweden. As had been anticipated after Will Gadd's victory in Kirov, most of the work had already been done and not much was left at stake. Nevertheless, this final competition was tinged with a hint of suspense as the Canadian World Cup leader failed, for the first time in six competitions, to qualify for the final, finishing twelvth but gaining 28 important World Cup points. Second placed François Lombard qualified for the Final however. But he was trailing by 78 points and even 100 points awarded for a victory would not be enough to oust Will Gadd from first place. Simple arithmetic showed that 6 points would seperate him from the top and leave him second overall, whatever happened. The suspense was over. Even still, the French champion gave it his best and made this competition his own, ahead of the Italian 'Bubu' Bole who had just returned from a whirlwind trip to Colorado. Third place went to the other French champion Daniel Dulac. Fourth to eigth place went to Aljaz Anderle, Erwan Le Lann, Stephane Husson, Henrik Bolander and Urs Odermatt respectively. The women's event was marked by French Isabelle Carrier's victory which finally broke Kim Csizmazia's complete dominance of this year's World Cup. The Canadian placed second, ahead of the Slovenian Alenka Jerala, third. Fourth to seventh place went to Margarita Kolodkina, Lydia Frolova, Ildi Kiss and Irina Ryzhenkova respectively. The first Ice World Cup was won deservedly therefore by the Canadian Will Gadd, who demonstrated convincingly that he was technically the most complete climber. Second place went to the Frenchman François Lombard; already winner of the sports climbing World Cup, he just missed out on making it two. Third place went to the other French champion Daniel Dulac, who changed specialities from bouldering to ice climbing and demonstrated that he is a force to be reckoned with in the future. Fourth place went to the Italian Mauro 'Bubu' Bole, who showed that he can hold his nerve not only during hard mixed onsights, but also during the testing World Cup competitions. The Women's World Cup was won by Kim Csizmazia, who literally dominated the entire series and recently proved that she is equally at home on hard mixed routes by repeating X-Files, M10 in Val di Cogne. Second place was awarded to the consistant Hungarian Ildi Kiss, ahead of the Russian Irina Ryzhenkova, third. |
