Ekaterina Barashchuk, Danyil Boldyrev crowned European Speed Champions in Moscow
First results from the European Climbing Championships currently taking place in Moscow: yesterday at the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace the 21-year-old Russian climber Ekaterina Barashchuk and 28-year-old Danyil Boldyrev of Ukraine were crowned European Speed Champions yesterday.
Barashchuk beat her 20-year-old teammate Elizaveta Ivanova by a margin of just 0,07 seconds, claiming the first senior gold medal of her career. In the small final for bronze Iuliia Kaplina beat Aleksandra Kalucka after having fallen in the semis and, importantly, after having stoped the clock at 6,96 seconds to set a new world record. The previous best had be set at 6,99 time by Indonesian athlete Aries Susanti Rahayu at last year’s World Cup in Xiamen (CHN).
In the tense men’s finals Boldyrev managed to beat Lev Rudatskiy of Russia by just 5 hundredths of a second, stopping the clock after 5,69 seconds. His gold crowns years of dedication: between 2013 and 2019 he finished four times on the European Championships podium, winning three silvers and one bronze. In the small final Marcin Dzienski easily beat Vladislav Deulin to claim bronze.
The European Championships continued today with the Boulder qualifications. Action continues tomorrow with the Semifinals and Final, all streamed live on the Russian Climbing Federation youtube channel.
