The International Federation of Sport Climbing has announced that the European Climbing Championships will take place in October, while the first three stages of the Lead World Cup 2020 scheduled for July have been postponed.

Following the announcement in February that the entire Boulder season 2020 would be rescheduled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the International Federation of Sport Climbing has now ratified that the Lead season calendar will be affected, too. The first three stages at Villars, Chamonix and Briançon scheduled for the start of July have been postponed to a later date.

Given the current situation this decision comes as no great surprise, unlike today’s announcement that sets the new date for the European Climbing Championships. Originally been scheduled for March, these will now take place from 1 - 8 October in Moscow. They represent the final chance for European athletes to earn the last two quota places for sport climbing’s historic Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020. Which yes, despite being reprogrammed to summer 2021, will nevertheless still be called Tokyo 2020.
