The first and potentially last leg of the Lead Climbing World Cup 2020 is currently being held at Briançon in France. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the International Federation of Sport Climbing was forced to reschedule practically the entire competition season, but as a result on ensuing cancellations Briançon may well be the only international Lead event. Since travel restrictions might not allow the participation of athletes coming from some areas of the world, no points will be awarded, including World Ranking and World Cup 2020 ranking points meaning that no World Cup will be assigned this season.

Nevertheless for the 10th year running the small French town has attracted many of the world’s best and beneath beautiful blue summer skies and a fresh breeze the first qualifiers of the 2020 season took place this morning. Laura Rogora and Janja Garnbret dominated the women’s routes while Adam Ondra was the only athlete to top out on both of the men’s qualifiers, and the top 26 have now progressed to the semifinals that take place at 19:30 this evening. The top eight will qualify for the finals which begin at 19:30 on Saturday evening. Both the Semis and the finals will be streamed live.
