5th European Championship in Munich

The 5th European Championship in Munich. Sarkany defends title, Vickers resigned from competition circuit
The highly anticipated 5th European Championship takes place this weekend in Munich's Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle. The 5 best athletes of each of the European Member states are eligible for the event, and will compete on a wall which is 12m high, 20m wide, and overhangs 8.5m.

Notable for his absence is the reigning European Champion Ian Vickers. Strong contenders for the men's title are therefore the Russian Evgueni Ovtchinnikov (victorious in Courmayeaur last weekend and Rock Master 2000), the Italian Dino Lagni (reigning World Champion and victorious in Chamonix), and the young Frenchman Alexandre Chabot, recent World Cup winner in Lecco and currently placed no.2 in the WC ranking. Others in with a medal chance are the highly consistent Cristian Brenna and the less consistent but incredibly strong Serik Kazbekov.

Muriel Sarkany, winner of the 1998 European Championship in Nürnberg, will do her best to defend her title against strong competition in the form of Liv Sansoz (reigning World Champion, victorious in Lecco and currently joint first with Sarkany in the WC ranking). Other forces to be reckoned with are the Slovenian Martina Cufar and French Stephanie Bodet, on top form after her victory in Chamonix and third place in Courmayeur.
