The Frenchman Oliver Besson summits Cho Oyu

Despite terrible conditions the French Mountain Guide manages to summit Cho Oyu (8201m), sixth highest mountain on earth

Cho Oyu (8201m), situated on the border between Nepal and Tibet, is the sixth highest mountain on earth. It was first climbed by the Austrians S. Jocheler and H. Tichy and sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama on 19 October 1954.

The French Mountain Guide Olivier Besson (Focus Exp.) reached the summit of Cho Oyu on 5 October. Details of his ascent are, as yet, still unknown but news from the crowded 8000er is that weather conditions are poor with strong winds and temperatures on the mountain as low as - 40° C.

The majority of expeditions have abandoned the climb because of the prohibitive climatic conditions. Stephen Auda, a doctor on the Edmond Joyeusaz expedition (Focus Exp.) of which Besson is a member, has had to treat dozens of mountaineers for frostbite, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Besson, Joyeusaz and the other expedition members should return to Kathmandu on 11 October before returning to Italy on 14 October.
