Hansjörg Auer remembers the Marmolada Fish route free solo
Talking about the Fish route, after yesterday’s video of Italian climber Federica Mingolla, here’s our take of Hansjörg Auer filmed in 2008 for the WebTv project planetmountain.com curated for the Trento Film Festival. We encountered a historic moment: the young and practically unknown Austrian had recently free soloed the Fish route (aka Via Attraverso il Pesce in Italian, or Weg durch den Fisch in German) up the South Face of Marmolada.
At the time, not even the Austrian could fathom the audacity and magnitude of that ascent, carried out in under three hours after having inspected the route quickly by abseil the day beforehand in utter solitude. Having, in advance, shared his dream with practically no one. Auer told us recently that now, almost 10 years later, this remains one of his most authentic moments captured on film.
