![]() On 1 January 2005 Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the President of the Italian Republic, named Lino Lacedelli "Cavaliere di Gran Croce" Knight of the Great Cross of the Italian Republic. The title is one of the most important honorific awards and pays tribute to the "world-famous mountaineer" who, together with Achille Compagnoni, reached the 8611m high summit of K2 on 31 July 1954. In doing so he made the first ascent of the second highest mountain in the world. On 15 July 2004, fifty years after this historic ascent, Lino Lacedelli returned to the base of the mountain that marked his entire life. This return was probably the greatest emotion of all! ![]() photo Lino Lacedelli last July at the foot of K2 (ph Giuseppe Ghedina)
