Ice Climbing for women in Austria's Pitztal
Avventura donna offers ice climbing for women in Austria's Pitztal
The initiative deserves attention and raises the age-old question, as to whether mountaineering is best left to men? The answer is obviously no, and the Austrian mountaineering school Avventura Donna is intent on proving it. Formed by Anna Torretta and Petra Freud, two UIAGM approved Mountain Guides, the school is “run by women for women”. Their winter program includes ice climbing, traditionally one of the bastions of this predominantly male dominated sport. The aim is to provide women with a means of learning the essential mountaineering skills autonomously from men. The Winter Camp 2002 will be held in Austria’s Pitztal, famous above all in recent years for hosting a stage of the IWC, from 18-24 January. The Avventura donna Team Anna Torretta, born in Turin in 1971, has lived in Innsbruck since 1988. She studied architecture before becoming a Mountain Guide. She is a member of the “Ice Team Italy” and placed 7th overall in the Ice World Cup 2001. Petra Freund, born in Innsbruck in 1970.Has climbed for 10 years and became a Mountain Guide in 2000. Rock climbing brought her to ice climbing, which she now does in the search of new ways to express both her body and mind. |
