Fowler and Watts make first ascent of Kajaqiao

Mick Fowler and Chris Watts have done it once again! The seemingly insatiable legendary British mountaineers have made yet another important ascent, this time with their first ascent of Kajaqiao (6447m) located in the Nyainquentaglia East Range of Tibet.

As climbing.com reports, the two climbed alpine style via the West Face and NW Ridge for 6 days, before needing another 3 days to descend from the summit. Fowler contacted climbing.com via email and said: "Weather conditions were wild. About 1.5 meters of snow fell whilst we were on the way up, and the temperature was consistently less than –20 degrees with 50 mph-plus winds. I would certain rank it as one of the best mountaineering ventures I’ve been on." Fowler, who won the Piolet d'Or in 2002 for his ascent of the spectacular Central Couloir on Siguniang's North Face, formed part of a small British expedition comprised of himself, Watts, Adam Thomas and Phil Amos.

Kajaqiao, or Jajacho, lies in the Nyainquentaglia East Range of Tibet, an area previoulsy closed to Westeners. The pyramid-like mountain inspired Japanese explorers to call it the "Matterhorn of the Nyainquentaglia."
