Ski Mountaineering World Championships 2013: the Vertical and Relay race

The Ski Mountaineering World Championships 2013 finished yesterday with the Relay race. The men's event was won by Switzerland ahead of Italy and France, while the Women's event was won by France ahead of Italy and Switzerland. The Vertical race was won by Kilian Jornet Burgada and Laetitia Roux.
After Thursday's Vertical race - the grueling 600 vertical meter dash won by Spain's Kilian Jornet Burgada and France's Laetitia Roux - the Ski Mountaineering World Championships 2013 at Les Ecrins came to a close on Friday with the Relay Race.

The women's Relay was dominated by the French trio Fabre - Mollaret and unbeatable Roux who with this win brought her tally of gold medals to an astounding four. They clocked in a minute and a half faster than the Italian trio Pellisier - Cazzanelli - Nicolini and two minutes faster that the Swisswomen Gex-Fabry - Mathys - Richard.

In the men's race the Italian squad couldn't have got off to a worse start: Damiano Lenzi (pictured on the left) lost his race skin but despite being last didn't lose heart and made a massive comeback to reach Manfred Reichegger placed second. The race then came down to the wire on the last leg: Jacquemoud fell, leaving Switzerland's Marcel Marti and Italy's Roberto Antonioli to duel for supremacy. The photo finish split them by a mere second and the joy of gold went to Switzerland.

The Youth event is an important indicator for the future and this was won outright by Italy, ahead of Switzerland and France.
