Fournel Ice Meet 2001 and "Piolet d'Or"
The 11th "Rassemblement International des Glacieristes du Fournel" will take place in Argentiere - La Bessée from the 10th to the 14th of January 2001 and the CAF will award the prestigious "Piolet d'Or"
A free shuttle service departs at 7.30 am and ferries the climbers to and from the ice falls. "Piolet d'Or" 2001 The candidates: Valéry Babanov (RUS) for his solo new route (1200m; 5c/6a, A2/A3, M6) on the North Face of Kangtega 6799m (Nepal). Patrice Glairon-Rappaz (FRA) for his solo ascent of "No Siesta" (7a/A2) Grandes Jorasses, 4208m (France). Mikhail Davy and Alexandre Klenov (RUS) for their new route (VI/A2) on Spantik, 7028m, (Pakistan). (see article) Thomas Huber (GER) and Iwan Wolf (SUI) for "Shiva's line" (A4/VII at 6200m) on Shivling, 6543 m, (India). David Jonglez (FRA) and Eduardo Alonso (ESP) for "Anissa" (1200m, 6b/A3) on Ketil (Greenland). Jules Cartwright and Ian Parnell (GB) for their new route on "Moonflower Buttress" (ED+) Mount Hunter (Alaska). | The 11th "Rassemblement International des Glacieristes du Fournel" will take place in Argentiere - La Bessée from the 10th to the 14th of January 2001 and, just like in previous years, is expected to attract a large number of ice climbers from around the world. There are over 250 icefalls in the valleys of'Aup Martin, Ailefroide, Chambran, Fournel and Freissinières and a free shuttle service has been organised to ferry the climbers to and from the icefalls during the five day meet. As has become customary, the French Montagnes Magazine will use the occasion to award the prestigious Piolet d'Or to the most significant ascent of the year. This is the tenth anniversary of what is widely regarded one of the most important awards for alpine achievements. All candidates will be present at the meet and the ceremony will take place on Saturday 13th January.
