UTMB, CCC, TDS, PTL... what might seem like a bunch of nonsensical letters are in fact important acronyms for thousands and thousands of runners who flock to the foot of Mont Blanc each summer to take part in what has become a true mountain race cult: The North Face Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc and its various other competitions.

The event draws so many runners that a few years ago the organisers were forced to limit the number of participants, and while 6000 ran beneath the pouring rain last year, in truth over 10,000 had asked to take part. Things are likely to be similar for the 2013 edition and pre-registration, which can only be done online, begins tomorrow. The closing date is 8 January 2013 but seeing how things turned out in the past, it’s clear that the race for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc begins in less than 24 hours…
