Last weekend saw not only the European Bouldering Championship but also the first stage of the Speed World Cup, won by 4-times World Champion Qixin Zhong from China and Iuliia Kaplina. The Russian raced to the buzzer at 15m height in a mere 7.74 seconds to beat her previous world record, set in 2013 at 7.85 seconds.

Kaplina beat her two team members Mariia Krasavina and Anna Tayganova, second and third respectively, while in the men’s event Zhong comfortably beat Poland’s Macin Dzienski. France’s Bassa Mawem completed the podium by beating, in the extremely fast small final, Russia’s Arsenii Shevchenko.

Congratulations to the only Italian in the competition Leonardo Gontero who, despite his disappointing result, demonstrated great passion and the desire to invest in this sport. His 16th place was the result of a fall, just like strongman Libor Hroza who finished 13; both will no doubt attempt to do themselves justice in the next stage at Chongqing in China on 20 - 21 June.
