Ski mountaineering World Cup 2014 starts today in Verbier-Val de Bagnes

The first stage of the Scarpa ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup 2014 starts today in Verbier-Val de Bagnes, Switzerland.

Verbier - Val de Bagnes, Courchevel, Val Comelico, Les Diablerets and Tromsø: these are the five stages of the 2014 Ski Mountaineering World Cup that kicks off today in Switzerland's Verbier-Val de Bagnes. The start is early, at 9.00am, with the Senior and Espoir categories comprised of 4 ascents and descents for an overall altitude gain of 1,700 metres over 13.7 kilometres. The Junior male category will battle along 1580m overall altitude gain, while their counterparts will tackle 1135m.

Obviously the line up is filled with all the best international athletes in the world, starting with 3013 World Cup winner William Bon Mardion who will attempt to defend his title against the likes of Kilian Jornet Burgada, Matheo Jacquemoud, Robert Antonioli, Michele Boscacci and Martin Anthamatten. In the women's event all eyes will be on Laetitia Roux, Maude Mathis, Emelie Forsberg, Axelle Mollaret ed Elena Nicolini, to name but five

After the strains and stress of Saturday's Individual race, Sunday continues with theVertical Race that begins at 10.00 and passes through the centre of Verbier to finish at Les Ruinettes at 2150m. The Senior will race up 755m altitude gain , while the Junior 619m.
