Papert and Berger win Ice climbing World Championship 2004
On 24/01/2004 Ines Papert and Harald Berger won the Ice climbing World Championship 2004. Alexandre Matveev and Natalia Koulikova won the Speed event.
On Saturday 24 January Harald Berger and Ines Papert were crowned Ice World Champions 2004 after winning the Championship in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Papert defended her title against the likes of Natalia Koulikova (RUS) and Kirsten Buchmann (GER) and, in winning 2002, 2003 and 2004, pulled off the nigh-on impossible to win three years in a row. No such luck for ex-champion Evgeny Kriovsheitsev, who had to make do with second place while Berger, on top form after impressive ascents outdoors, added this title to his overall World Cup victory in 2003. The Speed event was won by Alexandre Matveev who placed 5th in the difficulty event, and Natalia Koulikova, who consoled herself for her second place . About 100 athletes took part in what is 2004's only official international event. After three years of hard work establishing a credible World Cup circuit, the competition movement has now virtually ground to a halt. Let's hope the future holds some cold surprises in store...
