Marin and Eiter win third stage of World Cup Lead in Chamonix
Garcia Eduard Marin from Spain and Angela Eiter from Austria have won the third stage of the Climbing World Cup Lead took place in Chamonix, France, on Thursday 13 July.
![]() Despite intermittent rain the third stage of the Climbing World Cup Lead took place in Chamonix, France, on Thursday 13 July. 21 year old Garcia Eduard Marin from Spain won his first ever World Cup competition, while Angela Eiter from Austria won her third World Cup comp in a row, immediately putting behind her the European Championship hiccough in Yekaterinburg. The biggest surprise of all however was David Lama's (understandable) faux pax: the great and extremely young leader of the World Cup and freshly crowned European Champion failed to place higher than 9th overall. This stop to his winning run did little to the current leader board however, as closest rival and defending champion Flavio Crespi from Italy failed to capitalise, placing a disappointing 7th after a perfect qualification and semifinal. The men's event was also marked by a "Spanish double" with second place finally going, after a rather opaque start to the season, to Patxi Usobiaga. Third place went to Cedric Lachat from Switzerland who confirmed his outstanding form and European Championship silver. Emerging star Caroline Ciavaldini lived up to French hopes to place second for the second time this season (Puurs) and in doing so overtook teammate Sandrine Levet (only 7th in Chamonix) in the provisional 2006 ranking. Natalia Gros from Slovenia produced her best performance this season and placed 3rd, beating Barbara Bacher from Austrian and European Champion Charlotte Durif. Maja Vidmar from Slovenia, the above mentioned Sandrine Levet and Muriel Sarkany from Belgium completed the finishing line up. It now seems as if something is slowly changing at the top in the women’s cup: Ciavaldini, Durif, Gros and Vidmar are always up there, ready to pounce on Eiter's slightest mistake... Positive news in the men's event came from Jorg Verhoeven from Holland (4th), the ever present Tomás Mrázek (5th) and 6th placed Ramón Julián Puigblanque from Spain who, like Usobiaga, had climbed somewhat under par until now. A special mention must go to Klemen Becan from Slovenia who had placed 5th in the European Championship and who now placed 8th, and to "veteran" Christian Bindhammer who placed 10th in France. While Eiter consolidated her lead in the women's World Cup, the men's is somewhat more open. Flavio Crespi maintains second place, 34 points behind David Lama. But the 2006 season is a long one and everything has yet to be decided. David Lama, and others, permitting... The fourth stage of the World Cup Lead 2006 is scheduled for 29/30 July at Qinghai Province (CHN). Results men - Chamonix (FRA) 1. Marin Garcia Eduard ESP 2. Usobiaga Patxi ESP 3.
