Ice World Cup Saas Fee, Krivosheitsev and Papert victorious
The Ukrainian Euvgeni Krivosheitsev and the German Ines Papert win third stage of IXC 2001 in Switzerland
Saas Fee provided a weekend full of surprises for the third stage of the Ice World Cup 2001, as the Ukrainian Euvgeni Krivosheitsev and the German Ines Papert won in Switzerland, thereby halting the French supremacy. The first surprise occurred in the Women's Open, where the French athlete Liv Sansoz failed to qualify. Winner of the first two stages, Sansoz topped out along with place 22 other athletes. Ascent time was therefore taken into consideration, and on this basis she placed 19th. First to be excluded from the Semi-final, Sansoz failed to gain important points for the World Cup. Ines Papert, Margarita Kolodkina, Nadezhda Yakimova, Petra Muller-Sauter, Elisabeth Steurer, Ksenia Stopnikova, Skurenkova and Stéphanie Maureau all qualified in the Semi-final, and Ines Papert then topped out on a route in the Final to gain, after two second places, her well-earned first victory in the Ice World Cup. Elisabeth Steurer and Stephanie Maureau placed second and third respectively. A set of fresh faces also appeared on the Men's podium, as the first two places were awarded to athletes from the East. The Semi-final produced no great surprises with all the best athletes qualifying for the Final in which the Ukrainian Euvgeni Krivosheitsev got the better of Dmitrii Bytchkov and Daniel Dulac, second and third respectively. The leader of the World Cup Stephane Husson placed fourth. The next stage of the IWC will be held in Chamonix on 2-3 February, and the battle for first place is intensifying. Many blame Sansoz's defeat on her technique and the question that now arises is whether she will be able to reduce the technical gap between her and Ines Papert in time for the next event? And will the athletes from the east continue in the same manner as they finished off yesterday? > IWC 1st stage Piztal > IWC 2nd stage Valle di Daone > IWC 2001 calendar | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
