The finals of the Ice Climbing World Championship start today at 13.30 the best ice climbers in the world battling it out for the Lead title. On Saturday morning 22 female athletes from 13 nations competed in the Semifinals, including defending champion Angelika Rainer. The 28-year-old local climber felt the pressure but nevertheless held her verve to qualify second "The last 20 minutes before the semifinals were terrible. I was very nervous. But I'm happy that I can defend my title properly", explained Rainer.

The other South Tyrolean climber, Barbara Zwerger, climbed superbly too, surprising herself even to qualify for the final. ”I'm a little surprised, but obviously very happy with my performance. Qualifying for the final is already a great result, also because I couldn’ do any specific World Championship training beforehand" explained Zwerger.

The eight finalists
In addition to Rainer and Zwerger, the other finalists vying for the World Championship title are WoonSeon Shin (KOR), Liudmila Badaylan (RUS), Petra Klingler (SUI), Natalya Kulikova (RUS), Radka Petkova (BUL) and Nadezhda Gallyamova (RUS). Much to everyone’s surprise HanNaRai Song from Korea failed to qualify for the final.

In the men’s event, yesterday 19 athletes qualified for Sunday morning’s Semifinal, including the two favorites Tomilov Maxim (Russia) and Hee Yong Park (Korea).
