Kilian Fischhuber and Sandrine Levet have won the second stage of the bouldering World Cup 2004, held in Erlangen, Germany, last weekend. The young Austrian surprised all with a nigh perfect competition, topping out on all six boulders in the Semi-final and a staggering five out of six in the Final. A glance at the overall results underlines how impressive this first World Cup victory really is: second placed Jérôme Meyer, winner of the Cup in 2003, topped out on only 2 problems in the final and Salavat Rakhmetov, the only other athlete to close all six problems in teh Semi, slipped into tenth place after a grueling Final he'll prefer to forget. Ludovic Laurence and Stephane Julien completed the French connection by topping out on two problems in the Final, placing third and fourth respectively. Sandrine Levet made short work of the German competition, topping out on all six boulders in the Semi-final first go, and sending a total of five boulders in the Final. Ioulia Abramtchouk placed second, only just missing out on overall victory; she was separated from Levet by just one additional attempt needed one round earlier. Jenny Lavarda, without a doubt the greatest revelation of the women's competition, placed third, while Olga Bibik suffered the same fate as her teammate and finished tenth. Needless to say she, Abramtchouk and Rakhmetov will be highly motivated for the third stage of the World Cup 2004: Yekaterinburg, Russia, on the 5th of June. Results men 1. Fischhuber Kilian AUT 2.
