The Bouldering World Cup 2005 got underway in Birmingham, UK, on 18-20 March and was won unexpectedly by local Mark Croxall and, to no great surprise, by Sandrine Levet.

Croxall produced his best perfomance to date in front of the home crowd, beating semi-newcomer Remy Samyn from France. The Englishman, who placed fourth in Birmingham last year, was the only athlete to resolve all 12 problems, sending 6 in 10 attempts in the qualifiers, and the final 6 in 17 attempts. Truly outstanding. Remy Samyn made a comeback of the century, starting from provisional 12th place after the first round (4 tops together with Repcik, Jalmain, Dulac, Laurence and Gaidioz), and sending all 6 final problems in 18 attempts - just one more than Croxall.

The women's score can be explained quickly: Levet topped out of all 12 boulders (the qualifiers first go, the final in just 8 attempts), while Bibik topped out on 11 (6 tops in 7 attempts in the qualifiers, 5 tops in the final), as did Abramtchouk, who placed third due to her 3 tops in the qualifiers...

As is to say, Levet's domination in the women's event seems unrelentless, while the battle for supremacy in the men's category is increasingly difficult and unpredictable. But Birmingham is simply the start to a very long competition season. The likes of Meyer, Core, Fischhuber, Ludovic and last year's winner Dulac are all just warming up. We'll know more after the next competition.
