Bouldering World Cup 2016: showdown in Munich
The 2016 Bouldering World Cup is drawing to a close today after a season marked by surprises in the men’s event - where the overall gold medal is still up for grabs - and one constant in the women’s event, dominated in no uncertain terms by Britain’s Shauna Coxsey.
More than 140 male athletes and 80 female athletes lined up in Munich yesterday, a significant increase in numbers compared to previous legs this season, and for the fifth year running the location is the jaw-dropping Olympic Stadium.
A flurry of male athletes are in with a running for the overall title since all top positions are separated by the smallest of margins; those who stand the best chances to win gold are Japan’s Kokoro Fuji and Tomoa Narasaki and Russia’s Alexey Rubtsov and Rustam Gelmanov.
After yesterday’s qualifiers the provisional ranking is led by France’s Alban Levier, Russia’s Alexey Rubtsov and Tomoa Nagasaki. Canada’s Sean McColl has chosen not to take part in this event, while surprisingly Jan Hojer - home favorite as well as European Champion - failed to pass the qualifiers.
As previously mentioned, Shauna Coxsey won overall gold thanks to silver in Vail that sealed her season one competition ahead of schedule. The battle for overall silver and bronze is still wide open and Japan’s Miho Nonaka and Akiyo Noguchi and France’s Melissa Le Neve are bound to put on a great show. The semi-finals will be streamed live at 11:30, the finals at 18:30.
