Six stages are up for grabs in the Bouldering World Cup 2012 which begins on 13 April at Chongqing in China and comes to an end, like last year, in August in Munich, Germany. In between these two events there will be the stages in Log-Dragomer in Slovenia, Vienna and Innsbruck in Austria and the USA stage in Vail.
the two athletes to beat will obviously be Anna Stöhr and Kilian Fischhuber. Last year Stöhr won her second World Cup (after her first in 2008) while for Fischhuber 2011 marked a dominion which has no equals, seeing that he won his 5th overall World Cup after victories in 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2005.
It's clear though that there are numerous pretenders to the bouldering throne and the women's event will probably witness the usual battle between Stöhr and Akiyo Noguchi from Japan (winner in 2010 and 2009), and these two will have to watch out for Melissa Le Neve from France, Mina Markovic from Slovenia and Juliane Wurm from Germany. In the men's event the battle will be more intense than ever before, with calbre athletes such as Dmitry Sharafutdinov (Bouldering World Champion 2011 and 2nd in the Bouldering World Cup 2011), Rustam Gelmanov and Alexey Rubtsov who in last year's final stage in Munich produced an all-Russian podium. Their life won't be made easy by Guillaume Glairon Mondet from France, Sean McColl from Canada and, why not, Austrian Jakob Schubert who totally fdominated last season's Lead World Cup and also proved great ability in bouldering competitions, too.
From an Italian point of view it is worth noting that, after not competing in China and Jacopo Larcher's injury, the squad which will represent Italy at the second stage in Slovenia are Christian Core, Jenny Lavarda, Lucas Preti, Francesco Vettorata and Stefan Scarperi. We wish good luck to them, and to all those taking part in the Bouldering World Cup 2012.
