The competition season 2011 kicked off well last weekend in Italy's Milan with first stage of the Bouldering World Cup 201,won by Austria's Kilian Fischhuber and Korea's Jain Kim. While Fischhuber's victory was soemthing to be taken pretty much for granted, Kim's gold is somewhat of a surprise, sseing that the Korean athlete is associated above all with Lead competitions - in fact she won last year's Lead World Cup and silver in the Qinghai World Championship in 2009.
Fischhuber qualified first for the Finals and beat another revelation from the Lead event, namely his teammate Jakob Schubert who, qualifying last, proved to be yet another ace in the Austrain dream team. The extremely strong Russian Rustam Gelmanov placed third after haivng sent the same number of problems as Schubert, but with 3 more attempts.
In the difficult women's comeptition Kim beat the superly regular Anna Stöhr from Austria by topping out on three problems in the final, while the 2007 World Champion sent only two. Melissa La Neve climbed into third place with two problems in four attemtps, just like Stöhr, but two attempts more to reach the bonus zone.
The Speed competition was won by Sergey Sinitsyn who beat his Russian teammate Evgenii Vaitcekhovsky in the final, while the women's event was won byKseniia Alekseeva who beat Maria Krasavina. Leonardo Gontero from Italy stopped the clock in 7"93 and, in doing so, set a new Italian record.
