At the end of April the Croatian Paklenica National Park, famed for its natural beauty and, amongst climbers, for its compact Verdon-like limestone, will host the fourth edition of the “Big Wall Speed Climbing”.

As its name suggests, competitors will climb the 200m ‘Diagonalka’ (7-) as quickly as possible. Each two-man team has to alternate leads and clip all protection. Simul- climbing is prohibited.

Last year's sprint was won by the veterans Silvo Karo and Marko Lukic, while the italians Christoph Heinz and Erik Svab placed second, ahead of the Germans Stefan Glowacz and Peter Anzenberger. The women's event was won by Suncica Hrascanec and Irena Vrsalovic (HR).

At the end of each day there will be slide shows by Stefan Glowacz, lectures about the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest, a talk about El Capitan's Salathe Wall and, to cap it all, the awards ceremony. This year's first prize is truly amazing: 2500 euro for the men and 1500 euro for the women! If you haven't already decided what to do at the start of May…
