Liv Sansoz and Daniel Dulac win warm-up to IWC 2001
The first Austrian Ice Climbing Championship Open took place at Mandarfen, Pitztal on 16/17 December and was won by the French duo Liv Sansoz and Daniel Dulac. Over 60 male athletes and 15 female athletes competed in the event which officially marked the start to this seasons competitions. The competition was viewed by many as a final test before the IWC 2001 and, as such, provided some useful indicators to the upcoming season. The first is that of Liv Sansoz, recent winner of the climbing World Cup 2000, who sailed to victory in her first ever ice climbing competition. Is this to become the Leitmotif of the Ice World Cup? The Austrian Sandra Wielebnowski placed second (thereby becoming Austrian Champion), ahead of Elisabeth Steurer, third. The second indication is the confirmation of the winner Daniel Dulac, just ahead of the Italian Mauro 'Bubu' Bole. With last year's winner Will Gadd not competing, these two will surely be strong contenders for the overall title. The two Frenchmen Stephan Husson and François Lombard placed third and fourth respectively, while the Austrian Beat Kammerlander placed fifth, thereby becoming Austrian Champion.
