Chironico in Switzerland has been enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years and, as is so often the case, this massive influx of climbers has unfortunately resulted in friction with the landowners and local population. Threats of closure have fortunately been averted in the past, but as always wild camping, rubbish and disrespectful parking are the main issues.

In order to manage the area, at the start of the year the Municipality of Faido, the Patriciate of Chironico and the local climbers spearheaded by Bed & Breakfast In Lak'ech, launched a pilot project entitled Save the Boulders.

Basically, in Chironico, Nivo and Grumo there are now various temporary parking areas (TAP) and three designated parking Overnight zones where climbers can officially park and spend the night. These cost 0.50CHF per hour or 14CHF per overnight stay. The three areas are equipped with toilets and waste stations, and the parking fees are intended to cover the costs for maintaining the land and the services provided, in particular the cost of toilets and waste disposal.

The new parking system, which substitutes the old one that cost 19CHF regardless of whether one stayed for 1 or 24 hours, is fairly straightforward and is carried out by booking and paying online via the In Lak'ech website. Simply select the arrival and departure dates and times, and pay by credit card.

As mentioned above, this is a pilot project and its effectiveness will be evaluated carefully at the end of the year. It goes without saying that the ball is our court, and climbers must adhere to these new rules in order to safeguard future access to this world-class bouldering area.

PLEASE REMEMBER
– Use parking areas avoiding leaving vehicles on agricultural fields and along the streets
– No camping allowed
– For your waste, use the appropriate collection points
– Outdoor fires are forbidden
– Respect the peace of the Nature and population, avoid shouting
