Janja Garnbret claims first female ascent of historic 8c+ at Mišja Peč in Slovenia

Janja Garnbret usually makes quick ascents and concise posts on her social media, so the one she published earlier today highlights the importance of her latest repeat. It’s none other than Za Staro Kolo in Majheni Pes at Mišja Peč in Slovenia, first climbed by Tadej Slabe in 1992. Graded 8c+, at the time, it was considered one of the hardest sport climbs in the world. An “iconic route and a real piece of history,” as Garnbret explained, up there among the likes of other milestones such as Wolfgang Güllich’s Action Directe and Ben Moon’s Hubble.
The 25-year-old double Olympic champion had tried the route on and off since 2022 and explains that it ultimately became her longest project to date. The route has seen not more than a dozen ascents in its 30-plus history, and Garnbret's is now the first female ascent. She concluded her post saying that she even agree with an upgrade!
