A new sports climbing crag has been added to Arco and the Garda Trentino region. During the year in which Arco hosted the World Youth Climbing Championships, it is logical that a crag has been created specifically for the needs of families and their young children.

The aptly named Family San Martino crag was bolted as part of the Outdoor Park Garda Trentino project, a multi-year outdoor tourism development plan that encompasses six town councils in the Garda Trentino region as well as the Alto Garda and Ledro Valle Community, the Forest Council and SAT, directed by Ingarda, the local tourist agency.

The Outdoor Park Garda Trentino project includes 13 crags and more than 500 sports climbs that have been bolted by the public sector and are regularly checked and maintained. These numbers are expected to rise in the future, in particular the quantity of routes in the 6a - 6c grade range, ideal for the great number of climbers who take their first climbing steps indoors in large cities and then choose the Garda Trentino as their climbing holiday destination.

Families involved in outdoor sports are a reference point for the Garda Trentino, hence the success of the new climbing areas such as Massi di Prabi e del Gaggiolo, Muro dell'Asino and now this new family crag.

Located just a short walk away from the centre of Arco and the campsites, Family San Martino is situated in a beautiful olive grove close to one of the most famous crags in the world - Policromuro Massone.

The crag Family San Martino is split into two sectors: the Kids slab with 9 routes from 3a to 4b dedicated to the Ice Age animals, and the near vertical Junior sector with 8 routes from 4c to 6b dedicated to the adventures of Harry Potter.

A beautiful terrace has been built at the top of the crag. This can be reached via the easy path and is an ideal open-air classroom. From here a path leads quickly to the First Wolrd War trenches Trincee di Vastrè and the Oolite sedimentary rock quarry at Bosco Caproni.

The crag was financed by the Arco Town Council, with the help of the province of Trento’s Occupational and Environmental Enhancement Support Service.

New crags will continue to be developed in the near future in order to make Arco a reference point for families involved in outdoor activities.
