Earthquake in Central Italy, climbing and solidarity: Rebuild Boulder raises 11,000 euro

During the first 12 stages of Rebuild Boulder, the series of informal bouldering competitions currently taking place at climbing walls throughout Italy, over 11,000 euro have been raised to help those affected by the earthquakes that rocked central Italy in August and October 2016.

On 24 August 2016 the Apennines imountainous regions of central Italy were struck by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale. Over 250 people were killed as villages were reduced to rubble, and the areas' plight was increased further by subsequent tremors on 26 and 30 October. In response to this drammatic situation, as of November 2016 a series of grassroots climbing competitions have been taking place throughout the country to raise funds and help those affected by the earthquakes.

€ 11,260 have already been raised so far during the 12 competitions that have taken place in Rome, Torino, Campobasso, Florence, Ancona, Bologna, Vignate, Castelnuovo dei Monti, Felina and Quincinetto. Almost 1000 climbers have taken part in Rebuild Boulder, and the entire registration fee for each competition goes towards reconstruction after the earthquake.

The organisers of the fund raising initiative, the designer Stefano Vittori and Marco Iacono, the manager the Rome-based climbing gym Monkey Island, stated "The numbers we’ve achieved so far have far exceeded even our most ambitious forecasts: more than 30 gyms have signed up, and loads of solidarity all across Italy. Those who instruct, climb and spread the sport climbing message are evidently extremely generous.”
