Donner Summit saved for climbing in California
This world class climbing area offers finely textured granite with deep chimneys, low-angle slabs, overhanging test pieces and splitter cracks. Access had been at risk due to liability concerns expressed by the private landowners. After almost a year of negotiations with the local climbers, the Access Fund and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, the landowners agreed to sell the property which includes the crags Peanut Gallery, Road Cut and, importantly, the historic 400-foot Black Wall. The acquisition also protects the access trails to the popular Space Wall and Stealth Wall. In total these 11.9 acres host about 75 routes on which generations of climbers have tested their skills, including Yosemite legends such as Warren Harding and Royal Robbins, Max Jones, Mark Hudon and Jim Bridwell.
Success came about thanks to the climbing community, the Access Fund and other partners who joined forces to raise over $300,000 in just seven months to purchase the property. "Now, residents, visitors, and climbers alike can celebrate knowing this scenic landmark and world-class climbing area are permanently protected" says Perry Norris, the Land Trust’s executive director.
