Alexander Huber solos Opportunist 8b at Schleierwasserfall in Austria
On 19/02/2003 the German climber Alex Huber soloed Opportunist 8b, Schleierwasserfall, Austria
The German climber Alex Huber continues to make a name for himself. After pushing the limits in almost all of this sport’s facets, the 35 year old has now soloed "Der Opportunist", a classic 8b located in one of Austria’s top climbing areas, the Schleierwasserfall. This crag has long been one of Huber’s preferred training grounds, where in the early and mid-nineties he made numerous important first ascents including Om 9a and Gambit 8c+. First climbed in 1996 by Jean Minh Thin, the 'Opportunist' takes a steep diagonal line next to "White Winds" and "Cool your foot man", and has a crux section at about 12m. Huber, who made an audacious solo ascent of the 550m high Hasse Brandler on the Tre Cime di Lavaredo last summer, waited for ideal winter conditions for his impressive clockwork ascent on Wednesday 19 February. Congratulations to Alex, and a word of warning: beware of imitations... ascents of this type are exceptions that confirm the rule. It's a lot easier with a rope and, above all, safer!
