Paul Pritchard mountaineering book and film auction online

From November to December 2000 the British mountaineer Paul Pritchard will raise funds for people with head injuries on his website www.paulpritchard.com
An auction for mountaineering books signed by their authors will be available online from the start of November to 31 December on the website www.paulpritchard.com. The initiative, thought up and carried out by Paul Pritchard himself, will raise funds for the Headway Association, a registered charity which supports people who have suffered a head injury.

The editor of the Italian CDA publishing house Mirella Tenderini wrote the following about Paul Pritchard and his initiative, which is certainly worthy of support.

"Paul Pritchard, a young British mountaineer, won the Boardman Tasker Award for mountain literature with his book "Deep Play" in 1997 and used the prize money for a round-the-world climbing trip with his girlfriend Celia Bull.

While climbing a spectacular sea stack in Tasmania known as the Totem Pole, an enormous boulder dislodged and hit Paul. Celia held his fall, tied him to a ledge, abseiled off the stack and ran 8 kilometers to alert the rescue services. Paul was saved but the head injuries were so serious that the doctors thought he may never walk or speak again. During his long and difficult rehabilitation he overcame aphasia (so much so that he managed to write a second, beautiful book entitled "Totem Pole", which won the Boardman Tasker Award in 1999) but remains hemiplegic.

In time he has started to walk again and has even returned to the Totem Pole to assist his friends to climb the route on which the accident occurred. Pritchard has now turned his attention to helping those with brain injuries ("not everyone has been as lucky as I have") and is raising funds for the Headway Association which supports people who have suffered a head injury. In January he will climb Point Lenana, on Mt. Kenya.

The funds come from articles, photos and other sources that Paul manages to raise on his return. To finance his trip he will auction mountaineering books and films signed by their authors on his website www.paulpritchard.com (already online with information about Paul) from early November to the end of December.

I'm helping him collect the books. It would be nice if all those who love the mountains help him and spread the word. In any case the idea of an internet auction is brilliant and is worth following, even for curiosity's sake."
