Watch Marco Sappa repeat 'Sans Liberté' on Pic Adolphe Rey (Mont Blanc)
Last summer, Italian mountain guide Marco Sappa managed to repeat a legendary climb in the Mont Blanc massif, Sans Liberté on the northwest face of Pic Adolphe Rey.
Established by none other than Stevie Haston in 1995, the route initially follows an 8a trad crack freed by Jean-Claude Droyer and named Entrez dans la légende. It then continues on smooth granite protected by bolts placed by Haston, and the grade bumps up to 8b+.
Described in no uncertain terms by the British climber as "one of the best crack climbs in the world," Sappa confirmed its beauty, saying it was: "One of the most beautiful lines I have ever climbed and probably one of the hardest at high altitude in the entire Alps." This may well be the case as Sans Liberté is located at an impressive altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level.
