While the last two years have provided splendid icefalls in the Dolomites, unfortunately the current season has begun with mild temperatures and at present there is little ice. To keep motivation high, here's a short film of the first ascent of La salieria, established last March by the young South Tyrolean alpinists Martin Dejori, Alex Walpoth and Aaron Moroder up the SE Face face of Sas Rigais (Geisler group). Salieria means gutter, but the name also refers to the valley that must be skinned up on skis to reach the base of the route, Val Salieries. According to the first ascentionists the route "offers pleasant climbing up ice and mixed terrain with difficulties that never exceed grade 4 WI and M. Nevertheless it's a full-on adventure also because of the beautiful summit and long approach below the Geisler towers." At this point, in the hope that the temperatures finally drop well below freezing, we'll let the images do the talking.
