Gasherbrum II

On 24 July at 13.20 local time the Italian Ragni di Lecco mountaineers Mario Panzeri and Mario Merelli reached the 8035m high summit of Gasherbrum II, together with Lina Quesada from Spain. The three left Camp 2 perched at 6500m in the middle of the night after having reached it at 23.00 on 23 July.

The three mountaineers rested briefly and then set off or the top, 1500 vertical meters above. This extraordinary summit push proved to be necessary as Camp 3 had been blown away a few days earlier. Thankfully the weather proved to be fantastic and Panzeri, Merelli and Quesada enjoyed splendid views across the Karakorum towards K2, Broad Peak. Panzeri even smoked a cigarette before returning with the others to Camp 2 at 19.20, and safely back to Base Camp the next day.
