Mondinelli heads for Makalu

On 26 March the Italian Silvio Mondinelli left Italy together with his climbing partner Mario Merelli to climb Makalu via the Normal route.
On 26 March the Italian Silvio Mondinelli left Italy together with his climbing partner Mario Merelli to climb Makalu via the Normal route. First ascended in 1955 by a French expedition, the two Italians will join forces with three Spaniards - Edurne Pasaban, Joseba Gutierrez and Francisco Valencia - and two Austrians.

At present the expediditon members are trekking to base camp, and they plan their summit bid between 12-16 May.

Makalu 8463m is the fifth highest mountain in the world and located on the border between Nepal and Tibet.

It was first climbed on 15/05/1955 by a French expedition led by Jean Franco. The team members included J. Franco, J. Couzy, L. Terray, G. Magnone, J. Bouvier, S. Coupè, Leourux and A. Vialatte.
