Lhotse Couloir, the 2018 first ski descent by Hilaree Nelson, Jim Morrison
On 30 September 2018 Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison completed the first integral ski descent of Lhotse (8516m). The Americans had travelled to the Himalaya in the post monsoon season hoping that the couloir would be covered in snow and, as they were on their own, their expedition had to prepare the Icefall and the route on its own. Nelson and Morrison opted to use supplementary oxygen from 8300m onwards, ie from the base of the couloir, while they started skiing right from the summit and finished all the way down in Camp 2 at 6400m. The run, on the fourth highest mountain in the world, has few equals. Just like their Sherpa team: Palden Namgyal Sherpa (Everest x 4, Lhotse x 4, Manaslu x 1, Cho Oyu x 2, Ama Dablam x 3, Annapura I x 1), Ila Sherpa (Everest x 2, Lhotse x 1), Tashi Sherpa (Everest x 9, Manaslu x 1, Lhotse x 2), Urken Sherpa (Everest x 5, Lhotse x 1), Fura Sherpa (Everest x 4)...
