Jacopo Larcher and Barbara Zangerl making their free ascent of The Zodiac, El Capitan, Yosemite
François Lebeau
In autumn 2016 Jacopo Larcher and Barbara Zangerl reached the rim of El Capitan after having spent five days on the monolith’s East Face making a free ascent of Zodiac. Established solo by Charlie Porter in 1972, this historic big wall had only been climbed free twice beforehand, namely by Thomas Huber and Alexander Huber who made the first free ascent in 2003 and, immediately afterwards, by Tommy Caldwell. This was Larcher and Zangerl’s second big wall free climb after their Yosemite debut on El Niño in 2015, and it paved the way for their other big free ascents such as Magic Mushroom and Pre-Muir in 2018, and The Nose in 2019.
