For Lorenzo Castaldi 'Enzolino'
Today, Friday 30 March 2012 at 11:30 at Mater Ecclesiae in Sassari, the final farewell to Lorenzo Castaldi “Enzolino”, for the numerous alpinists and climbers who met him at the crags, in the mountains and the alpine forums for which he was one of the most impassioned and careful contributors.

Lorenzo "Enzolino" Castaldi on Le Chant du Cigne, Eiger North Face

Lorenzo Castaldi left us last Sunday, swept away on the North Face of the Ortles by an avalanche which, in all likelihood, was triggered by a serac fall. Spanish alpinist Jaime Gomez Diaz lost his life, too, while two German alpinists climbing the same face managed to survive and were rescued by the Mountain Rescue service. Born in Sassari, Sardinia 39 years ago, Lorenzo Castaldi was an esteemed Nanotechnology researcher, an alpinist and passionate climber with difficult first ascents and climbs in the mountains, with activity spawning new routes on Mount Olympus (Greece) to Sardinia, including numerous solo ascents in Sardinia and the Alps.
With his nickname "Enzolino", Lorenzo was one of the best known and regarded reference points in the alpine web community. He had been one of the most careful and competent contributors to the debate which followed the Cerro Torre bolt chopping, so much so that his contributions were published by several important websites. We too followed his thoughts, both in our Forum and on Fuorivia. His death is a loss for everyone... In joining his family's pain, we want to remember him with the words of the alpine community and those of his climbing companions.
