Everest and Himalayan ascents

On 23/05 Manuela Di Centa becomes the first italian women to climb Everest, while Jean-Christophe Lafaille climbs Dhaulagiri on 20/05
The much anticipated weather window has finally arrived, resulting in a flourish of Himalayan ascents.

Everest
Everest is obviously the mountain that breaks all records, with numerous ascents happening right at this moment. These include the lightening fast ascent by Pemba Dorje in just 12 hours and 45 minutes, although it has to be underlined that this record ascent was carried out with the aid of supplementary oxygen. Yuichiro Miura from Japan, if confirmed, becomes the oldest man to summit at 70, while the cross-country Italian olympic medalist Manuela Di Centa becomes the first italian women to summit. Her teammate Fabio Meraldi has had to abandon his record attempt: after reaching Camp 2 in an amazing 2.37 hours, the skyrunner has had to give up due to extreme cold. Should the good weather continue, Meraldi will try once more.

Other ascents
On 20 May at 10.00 Jean-Christophe Lafaille topped out on Dhaulagiri alone and, as always, without supplementary oxygen. The Frenchman endured high winds and heavy snowfalls throughout his three day speed ascent. This is Lafaille's ninth 8000er, and is now already underway to his next objective: Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat.
