Banff Mountain Film Festival 2000
The Banff Mountain Film Festival 2000 and Banff Mountain Book Festival take place from 1-5 November and are preceded by the Banff Mountain Summit
The highly anticipated Banff Mountain Film Festival 2000 will take place in Banff, Canada from 3-5 November. Organised by the Banff Centre for Mountain Culture, the 25th edition will be inaugurated by the Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner who will present excerpts from "Victoire sur lAnnapurna", the historic 1950 film directed by expedition member Marcel Ichac, which documents the first ascent of Annapurna. This is yet another occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of an 8000m peak. The three day event will screen 40 films chosen from 212 entries from 24 different countries. Some, such as Dhaulagiri Express and Reticent Wall by Stipe Bozic, have already been screened on the International Mountain Film Festival circuit, while others will be shown for the first time. Last year's 24th Banff Mountain Film Festival was won by Willian Long's "Vision Man". The Banff Mountain Book Festival will take place simultaneously from 1-5 November. This awards the best books for the categories of Grand Prize, Mountain Literature, Mountain Exposition, Mountain Image and Adventure Travel. Last year's Grand Prize was awarded to Paul Pritchard's "The Totem Pole: and a Whole New Adventure". These two events were preceded yesterday by the Banff Mountain Summit which provided "a forum for the worlds pre-eminent mountaineers to share their passion for the highest places on earth." The impressive list of guest speakers included Sir Christian Bonington, David Breashears, Kitty Calhoun, Riccardo Cassin, Greg Child, Yvon Chouinard, Peter Croft, Wade Davis, Kurt Diemberger, Catherine Destivelle, Ed Douglas, Mick Fowler, Will Gadd, Anderl Heckmair, Lynn Hill, Sir Edmund Hillary, Dr.Thomas Hornbein, Dr.Charles Houston, Leo Houlding, Silvo Karo, Guy Lacelle, Jeff Lowe, Pat Morrow, Royal Robbins, Audrey Salkeld, Doug Scott, Todd Skinner, Junko Tabei, Jack Tackle, Ed Viesturs and Krzysztof Wielicki. |
