The longest and "highest" sleddog race in Europe, the "Trans Alpes Paul Emile Victor" gets underway
The first stage of the "Trans Alpes Paul Emile Victor" got underway at Auron, in the French Maritime Alps on 4 February. This is longest and "highest" sleddog race in Europe and covers a distance of 500km to finish at Les Contamines on 17 Februray.![]() The dogs and their sledges will ascend 12000m meters and climb 15 peaks over 2500m, including Monte Thabor, at 3500m the highest mountain in the race. The "Trans Alpes Paul Emile Victor" was inspired by the polar explorer Paul Emil Victor, who first completed this course in 1938. photo and text Mauro Barra |
