On Friday evening the classic Sellaronda ski mountaineering marathon took place in the Dolomites and was won by the duo Guido Giacomelli and Hansjoerg Lunger in the men's event, and Roberta Pedranzini and Francesca Martinelli in the women's. Both pairs broke the previous course record, clocking 3:19:29 and 4:01:14 respectively for the 42km and 2700m height gain. Giacomelli and Lunger took an early lead but had to battle hard against the duo Daniele Pedrini - Mirco Mezzanotte who eventually placed second (3.28.40). 2001 winners Graziano Boscacci and Ivan Murada placed third just three minute later (3.31.59). Stefanie Koch - Judith Grassl placed second in the women's event in 4.34.22, while Carla Jellici - Michela Rizzi placed third in 4.34.22.

The Sellaronda is a dream competition, a true classic which traverses the Dolomites from Selva di Val Gardena via the Gardena mountain pass, Corvara, Passo Campolongo, Arabba, Passo Pordoi, Canazei and Passo Sella.
