After making its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, on Monday 5 August sport climbing will make its second-ever appearance at the Games as it takes part in Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The biggest change of all compared to 4 years ago is that the much-criticized, original Combined format - thanks to which sport climbing managed to get a foot in the Olympic door - has been ditched as a result of the International Olympic Committee deciding to award four medals in two different disciplines per gender: Speed climbing and Combined Boulder & Lead. This split, welcomed pretty much unanimously by all athletes, means that the number of climbers taking part in the 2024 Summer Olympics has risen significantly, from 40 to 68.

All athletes gained their quota spot thanks to a complex pathway of Olympic Qualification rounds and both defending champions, Janja Garnbret of Slovenia and Alberto Ginés López of Spain, have qualified and are aiming for a second Olympic gold medal.

Speed will obviously be awarding its first-ever set of medals; the only Speed climbers with previous Olympic experience are Poland's Aleksandra Mirosław, who finished fourth at Tokyo 2020, and Bassa Mawem, who had to pull out midway through the competition after tearing his bicep. Both set the Olympic record at 6.84 and 5.45, but these records are bound to be broken since times on the 15m route have tumbled, with male specialists now regularly going under the five-second barrier. The current world records stand at 6.24 for women and 4.798 for men, set by Mirosław and Samuel Watson of the USA.

Action starts on Monday at the stunning Le Bourget Climbing venue, specifically constructed for these competitions, and runs straight through until Saturday. For those not in the French capital, here's the complete list of how to watch the Olympic Games. Just like in 2020, planetmountain will follow the events live as they unfold. Stay tuned.
