Mrázek and Levet win Master Serre Chevalier
Tomas Mrázek and Sandrine Levet win the Master Serre Chevalier 2003
Those who thought that the "levelling off" and "emerging athletes" were a one-off affair need think again. It is true that super Tomás Mrázek, winner of the World Championships in Chamonix a fortnight ago, won in Serre Chevalier last weekend, as did Sandrine Levet, who piped to the post World Champion Muriel Sarkany in the Superfinal. But the true novelty is the arrival of fresh faces, with the likes of Patxi Usobiaga who, just like in Chamonix, placed second behind Mrázek. And was followed in third place by eighteen year old Eduard Marin Garcia and Alexandre Chabot, by now somewhat more "human" than in the past. This freshness is reflected, admittedly to a slightly lesser extent, in the women's event, with well-known Emilie Pouget third, ahead of Alexandra Eyer fourth. Tomás Mrázek dominated the men's after-work route, finishing 17 holds from the top but an impressive 5 moves higher than Usobiaga and another four or five higher than Marin Garcia and Chabot. Almost all other finalists finished beneath the large roof: Millet, Ovtchinnikov, Auclair, C. Bindhammer, Sova and Pouvreau, fifth to tenth respectively. First place in the women's event was an exclusive Levet - Sarkany affair. The two were the only athletes to top out in the Final, and in the ensuing Superfinal Sarkany fell at half height, while Sandrine climbed higher, calling Serre her own.
