Daniel Dulac and Ines Papert win the Ice World Cup 2001

The Frenchman Daniel Dulac and Ines Papert win the IWC 2001 after the final stage at Kirov, Russia
10/03/2001

In the end the final stage in Russia proved definitive, and in winning the coveted Ice World Cup 2001 the Frenchman Daniel Dulac and the German Ines Papert had the final word. The competition had all the makings for a highly emotional final and it certainly didn't disappoint!

Starting in provisional second place, Daniel Dulac had to win and then sit back, watch and …hope. All depended on his teammate and provisional leader Stephane Husson, for whom a 3rd place at Kirov would have secured victory. The women's event presented an identical scene with Liv Sansoz trailing Ines Papert by 40 points. It was going to be tense…

Men's event
Anthony Lamiche, followed by Stephane Husson and the Englishman Tim Emmet best qualified in the Open 1, while Odermatt (SWI), Anderle (SLO), Du Lac (FRA) e Matveev (RUS) led the field after the Open 2. Dmitri Bytchkov and Daniel Dulac climb highest in the Semi-final and qualifed for the Final, as did Anthony Lamiche (FRA), Maxim Tomilov (RUS), Aljaz Anderle (SLO), Stephane Husson (FRA), Alfred Dvorak (AUS), Premrl Klemen (SLO) and Aleksandr Lastochkin (RUS).

In the Final Dmitri Bytchkov and Daniel Dulac won joint-equal first place, while Anthony Lamiche placed third. Stephane Husson kept his chance of overall victory alive by placing fourth, putting Dulac under intense pressure: victory in Kirov and overall victory of the Cup depended on his performance against Bytchkov in the ensuing Superfinal!

But Daniel Dulac kept his nerve and climbed highest, winning in Kirov and adding the IWC 2001 to his overall 3rd place last year. Stephane Husson placed an excellent second, ahead of his teammate Anthony Lamiche 3rd.

Women's event
The duel between Liv Sansoz and Ines Papert alternated between one stage and the next. The German won the first stage with Sansoz hot on her heels, but in the Semi-final Sansoz qualified highest, just ahead Sdobnikova and Papert third. They were followed into the Final by Yakimova (RUS), Buchmann (GER), Epifanova (RUS), Anna Torretta and Shkurenkova (RUS).

Sansoz needed to win for a chance at overall victory, and indeed she managed to climb above the rest, but Ines Papert's consistency paid off: after three second places and one victory in Saas Fee, her second place in Kirov was enough for victory of the Ice World Cup 2001. Sansoz on the other hand won in Pitztal, Val Daone, Chamonix and Kirov, but exited early and failed to gain any points at… Saas Fee.

Third place at Kirov went to Ksenia Sdobnikova while Nadejda Yakimova, won third place overall in the IWC 2001.

So the second edition of the IWC has now come to a close. An edition which most certainly proved to be spectacular in all its stages, confirming this sport's rapid evolution and growth. Without doubt merit for this goes to the organisation which, in little more than two years, has managed to create an absolutely important event. Helped in part due to ice climbing's rekindled popularity, and in part due to the sponsors and towns who believed in the event… Hopefully they will continue to do so.

And what about the athletes? Hopefully many of them will transform and fulfil the potential demonstrated in competition outside, on ice routes and modern dry tooling testpieces. Their results are awaited with great curiosity, for some athletes from France and the East in particular produced some surprising performances - after having taken to ice axe and crampons just a short while ago.

See you next year for the 3rd Ice World Cup.
